Successful Northern Ontario Walleye Fishing

By Nancy Gardner

There are several scenarios of walleye fishing. Some individuals go for numbers while others go for the sizes. Others feel happier when they find hotspots at rocky points or off the shoal. Here they get to catch small walleyes. Catching one after another in Northern Ontario walleye fishing seems boring. You will not have a large catch before your trip is over.

People need to know that during springs, these fish prefer staying in places with river currents or those close to the shore. Look for them farther from the shore, probably past ten feet. In great lakes of Canada, those fish that will not spawn in the rivers will go to the shores. Most of them will be through with spawning when the fishing season ends. They will not leave the places because they want to protect the young ones.

When you mount light jigs, hurry up and catch along the shores. Then aggressively retrieve it since these fish are usually aggressive at this time. It is advisable to make use of brighter colors like white, red, chartreuse and yellow. There are some that will come to feed at the jig. They will still come because they get attracted to the bright colors. They become aggravated by these colors. Most of them will be attracted to the white colors.

At daytime and during early spring, those fishing will likely have a large catch of younger fish. They get them easily at the beds. During these periods, big females are usually at the deeper portions. Those who are after hunting larger sizes should go fishing in places where the fish do not spawn. That is in deeper sections. These big fish prefer deep parts.

As a fisherman, you ought to know the areas you will likely get a big hunt. When fishing during spring, do not forget to put on a small rapala. At this time, troll slowly along the line of the shore. Most of your catch will be around four feet inside. Again remember that they prefer red, chartreuse, fire tiger and blue colors.

If you will keep on trolling past a certain spot and hit them, then you should know that many of them are there. In that case, you can stop your boat and begin casing. Avoid trolling back and forth severally because this spooks the area and stops them from feeding. They will disappear from these points.

If you are normally stubborn in your job, and you are never ready to do new things, then you would never come to appreciate northern fishing. You will hold on to believe that southern waters are better. All fishermen should be aware that around ninety five percent of the fish are in shallower waters during springs. In the afternoon, bigger females tend to move deeper to hide from the sun and the pikes.

They normally go deeper in summer. Some will stay in river mouths or at the layoff points of the rocks. They also find rock drop offs to be good. In Lakes that have flat structures, they shade in the thick weeds for protection.
