Over the past decade, there have been growing claims of some nutritional supplements helping in the prevention of a number of diseases affecting the eyes. Nonetheless, some of such claims are deemed irrelevant by various studies. Other studies have again proved that certain eye vitamin supplements may actually be beneficial to individuals highly predisposed to eye diseases.

Most of these studies revolves around the AMD or age-related macular degeneration, which is a leading cause for loss of vision. AMD is usually a serious problem since over a million people are estimated to have an advanced form of this condition, while another 8 million is thought to be at risk. According to studies, however, taking supplements rich in eye vitamins minimizes the risk of losing your vision due to AMD.

It is, however, important to note that these supplements are not magic bullets for eye health. This is because there is no any evidence to suggest that these nutritional improvers can prevent people without a vision problem from getting age-related macular degeneration. Normally, most eye health experts often recommend these improvers to people already experiencing certain types of vision problems. For instance, these improvers can be more beneficial to those with dry AMD which is less severe due to its slower progression on vision loss, compared to wet AMD that is more severe.

On the contrary, these enhancers will not remedy all your eye problems. For example, some of these supplements will only be recommended following an eye examination to reveal yellow spots or drusen, an indication of AMD. This is since such supplements can only work when a person has the yellow spots.

Normally, antioxidants are the common nutrients found in most eye health supplements. This is because the oxidative stress, a damaging result of toxins and reactive oxygen are implicated in AMD, many age-related conditions, as well as the aging process itself. These antioxidants are usually thought to reduce the progression rate of vision loss.

Basically, eye health is not merely about pills. Usually, the antioxidants in these nutritional add-ons are actually naturally found in the body and in other food types. However, some studies suggest that by taking the green leafy vegetables, you minimize the likelihood of vision loss. Again, these antioxidants found in foods are more than the ones in a single supplement. At the same time, the body usually processes these nutrients better in food than if taken in a supplement form.

However, it is not clear whether taking large antioxidant doses is beneficial. Also, it is not recommended to take large doses of these nutritional improvers. This is due to the fact that the body will only use a certain amount of these nutrients, but taking larger doses might not hurt.

Essentially, taking eye vitamins is important in maintaining the health of the eyes. At the same time, the vitamins for eyes also play an important part in preventing many other diseases. While these vitamins and minerals can be obtained by eating certain type of food, this might be almost impossible in this era of fast food where getting a healthy meal might not be possible. For this reason, vitamin supplements for eyes are important.
